Bringing Khanbogd – Shar Tsav Geopark to the international stage

The momentum continued during UNCCD COP17, held in Ulaanbaatar from 17 to 28 August, where the Khanbogd – Shar Tsav Geopark was introduced to an international audience of policymakers, experts, practitioners and partners working on land, climate and sustainable development.

Throughout the conference, the geopark was showcased at the UNESCO–UNDP Joint Pavilion in the Blue Zone, where participants had the opportunity to learn more about its heritage and its potential to support sustainable tourism and community-based development.

A dedicated side event, “Khanbogd – Shar Tsav Geopark, Mongolia’s Aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark: Geo and Cultural Heritage for Sustainable Livelihoods, Conservation and Local Development,” was held on 25 August in the Green Zone. It highlighted the aspiring geopark’s rich array of heritage, with a focus on the Khanbogd Massif and Shar Tsav Dinosaur Track Site and their scientific significance. The event was accompanied by a photo exhibition, visual and informational materials, and a display of local handicrafts, offering participants a broader perspective on the area’s heritage and communities.
